Master the conditional perfect (antepospretérito) in Spanish. Learn to express hypothetical past events, probability, and regrets.
El Antepospretérito (Condicional Compuesto)
In Spanish, the antepospretérito (also known as the condicional compuesto) is used to talk about actions that would have happened in the past but did not, or to express conjecture and probability about a past event that occurred before another past moment.
1. Formation & Conjugation
⚙️ Formula
The condicional compuesto is formed by using the conditional simple of the auxiliary verb haber followed by the past participle of the main verb:
haber (conditional) + past participle
📝 Conjugating Haber
Here is how you conjugate haber in the conditional simple:
- yo habría
- tú habrías
- él/ella/usted habría
- nosotros/as habríamos
- vosotros/as habríais
- ellos/ellas/ustedes habrían
Common Irregular Past Participles:
| Infinitive | Past Participle | Conditional Perfect Example |
|---|---|---|
| hacer (to do/make) | hecho | Yo habría hecho la comida. (I would have made the food.) |
| decir (to say/tell) | dicho | Ella lo habría dicho. (She would have said it.) |
| escribir (to write) | escrito | Nosotros lo habríamos escrito. (We would have written it.) |
| ver (to see) | visto | ¿Tú lo habrías visto? (Would you have seen it?) |
2. Key Uses: Hypotheses & Regrets
💭 1. Hypothetical Past Events
It describes actions that would have occurred in the past, but did not, because a certain condition was not met. It is typically paired with the Pluperfect Subjunctive (pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo) in "si" clauses.
"Si hubieras estudiado, habrías aprobado." (If you had studied, you would have passed.)
💔 2. Regrets & Unfulfilled Wishes
Used to express regret or frustration about past actions that cannot be changed. It is frequently accompanied by verbs like gustar, preferir, or querer.
"Me habría gustado ir contigo." (I would have liked to go with you.)
Structure in Conditional Sentences:
- Condition (Si clause): Si + pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo (e.g. Si yo hubiera sabido...)
- Result: Antepospretérito / condicional compuesto (e.g. ...te habría ayudado.)
- Alternative order: Te habría ayudado si hubiera sabido. (I would have helped you if I had known.)
3. Conjecture & Probability in the Past
Speculating About a Prior Past Point
Similar to how the simple conditional expresses probability in the past (e.g. ¿Qué hora sería? - What time could it have been?), the conditional perfect expresses probability, wonder, or conjecture about a past action that happened before another past moment.
"Ayer a las ocho ya habrían terminado de cenar." (Yesterday at eight they must have already finished dinner / had probably already finished dinner.)
Comparison Table: Simple vs. Compound Conditional
| Tense | Focus | Spanish Example | English Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Condicional Simple | Hypothetical future/present action or past probability | Yo iría al cine. | I would go to the cinema. |
| Antepospretérito | Hypothetical past action that never happened or probability prior to a past point | Yo habría ido al cine. | I would have gone to the cinema. |
