The Spanish Present Perfect: El Antepresente
The Antepresente (formally known as Pretérito Perfecto Compuesto) is used to talk about actions that occurred in the past but have a strong connection to the present moment. Whether you're describing life experiences, recent events, or actions within an unfinished time frame, the present perfect is one of the most useful past tenses in daily Spanish conversations.
1. The Formula: Haber + Participle
⚙️ The Formula
To form the Antepresente, use the present tense of the auxiliary verb haber followed by the past participle of your main verb.
Haber (present) + Past Participle
⚠️ Keep Them Together!
Unlike English, where you can say "I have already eaten", in Spanish you **cannot place any words** between haber and the participle. Object pronouns and negatives always go **before** haber.
Conjugation of Auxiliary Verb Haber:
| Subject | Haber (Present) | Participle | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | he | hablado | He hablado con él. (I have spoken with him) |
| tú | has | comido | ¿Has comido ya? (Have you eaten already?) |
| él / ella / usted | ha | vivido | Él ha vivido aquí siempre. (He has always lived here) |
| nosotros / nosotras | hemos | viajado | Hemos viajado mucho. (We have traveled a lot) |
| vosotros / vosotras | habéis | visto | ¿Habéis visto esto? (Have you seen this?) |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | han | llegado | Ellos ya han llegado. (They have already arrived) |
2. Regular & Irregular Participles
✅ Regular Participles
- -AR verbs end in -ado (hablar → hablado, comprar → comprado)
- -ER / -IR verbs end in -ido (comer → comido, vivir → vivido)

"Hoy he tomado tres cafés." (Today I have had three coffees - today is still ongoing).
🎒 Life Experiences
Use it to talk about life experiences without stating the exact date or time (often using *alguna vez, nunca, ya, todavía no*).
"¿Alguna vez has estado en Colombia?" (Have you ever been to Colombia?).

- esta mañana / esta semana / este mes (this morning / week / month)
