Cuándo No Usar Gerundio

Learn the limitations of the gerund (-ando, -iendo) in Spanish. Avoid typical English-interference errors like posteriority, noun usage, and adjectival modifiers.

Cuándo No Usar Gerundio (Gerund Misuses)

In English, the "-ing" form (gerund/participle) is extremely versatile. It functions as a noun, an adjective, and a progressive verb. However, the Spanish gerund (-ando, -iendo) is highly restricted. Overusing it is one of the clearest signs of an English-influenced accent. Let's learn when NOT to use it.

1. No Noun or Subject Usage

🚫 Use the Infinitive Instead

In English, you say "Smoking is bad" or "I like running." In Spanish, the gerund cannot act as a noun or subject. You must use the **Infinitive**.

"Fumar es malo." (Smoking is bad). [NOT: Fumando es malo].

"Me gusta correr." (I like running). [NOT: Me gusta corriendo].

2. No Gerund of Posteriority

Actions Must Be Simultaneous or Prior

The Spanish gerund can only describe actions that happen **before** or **at the same time** as the main verb. It cannot describe a subsequent action (an action that happens after the main verb).

"El ladrón huyó y fue atrapado horas después." (The thief fled, being caught hours later).

[Incorrect: ...huyó, siendo atrapado horas después.]

"Se cayó de la bici y se rompió el brazo." (He fell off the bike, breaking his arm).

[Incorrect: ...cayó, rompiéndose el brazo.]

3. No Adjectival Modifier

📦 Do Not Modify Nouns

In English, you say "a box containing books." In Spanish, you cannot use a gerund to modify a noun directly. Instead, use a relative clause (que + verb) or a preposition (con).

"Una caja que contiene libros" or "Una caja con libros."

[Incorrect: Una caja conteniendo libros.]

⚠️ Exceptions

There are only two lexicalized exceptions accepted by the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE):

  • Agua hirviendo (boiling water)
  • Clavo ardiendo / madera ardiendo (burning nail / burning wood)
