Imperativo Básico (Affirmative Tú Commands)
The imperative mood is used to give orders, advice, instructions, or to make requests. At the A1 level, we focus on affirmative commands for the informal "tú" (you).
1. Regular "Tú" Commands
📝 The Golden Rule
For regular verbs, the affirmative informal command is identical to the third-person singular (él/ella) of the Present Indicative. Or simply drop the -s from the "tú" form.
| Verb Ending | Infinitive | Present Indicative (Tú) | Tú Command |
|---|---|---|---|
| -AR | Hablar | hablas | habla (speak) |
| -ER | Comer | comes | come (eat) |
| -IR | Escribir | escribes | escribe (write) |
2. The 8 Irregular Commands
⚠️ Irregular Forms
There are eight highly common verbs that have short, irregular forms in the affirmative tú command. A great way to remember them is with the phrase: "Vin Diesel has ten weapons" (Ven, Di, Sal, Haz, Ten, Ve, Pon, Sé).
| Infinitive | Tú Command | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Decir (to say) | di | Di la verdad. (Tell the truth). |
| Hacer (to do/make) | haz | Haz tu tarea. (Do your homework). |
| Ir (to go) | ve | Ve al supermercado. (Go to the supermarket). |
| Poner (to put) | pon | Pon los libros aquí. (Put the books here). |
| Salir (to leave) | sal | Sal de la casa. (Leave the house). |
| Ser (to be) | sé | Sé bueno. (Be good). |
| Tener (to have) | ten | Ten paciencia. (Have patience). |
| Venir (to come) | ven | Ven aquí, por favor. (Come here, please). |
3. Attaching Pronouns
⛓️ Pronoun Attachment
With affirmative commands, direct, indirect, and reflexive pronouns are always attached to the end of the verb to form a single word. If the word becomes longer, we add an accent mark to maintain the stress.
"Poner + te" → Ponte la chaqueta. (Put on the jacket).
"Escuchar + me" → Escúchame. (Listen to me).
