Imperativo Formal (Usted / Ustedes)

Master formal commands and polite requests in Spanish. Learn the present subjunctive conjugation, vowel swaps, irregular verbs, and negative commands.

Polite Commands: Usted & Ustedes

In Spanish, the imperative mood changes significantly depending on your relationship with the listener. For formal settings, professional environments, addressing elders, or talking to strangers, we use the formal imperative (Usted / Ustedes). Unlike informal commands, the formal command forms are identical for both affirmative and negative commands!

1. The Vowel Swap Rule

🔄 Vowel Swap

Formal commands are based on the present subjunctive (or the first-person singular 'yo' of the present indicative). The basic rule is to swap the thematic vowel:

  • -AR verbs swap to -e (Usted) or -en (Ustedes).
  • -ER/-IR verbs swap to -a (Usted) or -an (Ustedes).

💡 Stem Changes

Because these forms are derived from the 'yo' form of the present tense, any stem changes (like e→ie, o→ue, e→i) or irregular stems (like yo tengo → teng-) carry over to the formal command!

Regular Formal Commands:

InfinitiveUsted (Singular)Ustedes (Plural)Example in Context
hablar (-AR) ¡Hable! ¡Hablen! "¡Hable más despacio, por favor!" — Speak slower, please!
comer (-ER) ¡Coma! ¡Coman! "¡Coman un poco de pastel!" — Eat some cake!
escribir (-IR) ¡Escriba! ¡Escriban! "¡Escriban su nombre aquí!" — Write your name here!
pensar (e-ie) ¡Piense! ¡Piensen! "¡Piense antes de actuar!" — Think before you act!
dormir (o-ue) ¡Duerma! ¡Duerman! "¡Duerman bien, señores!" — Sleep well, gentlemen!

2. Irregular Formal Commands (D.I.S.E.S.)

🔥 The 5 Irregulars

Just like in the present subjunctive, there are 5 highly irregular verbs that do not follow the vowel swap rule because their present indicative 'yo' form doesn't end in 'o'.

🧠 Mnemonic

You can remember them using the acronym D.I.S.E.S.: Dar, Ir, Ser, Estar, Saber.

The 5 Irregular Verbs:

InfinitiveUsted CommandUstedes CommandExample in Context
dar den " un paso atrás." — Take a step back.
ir vaya vayan "Vayan al fondo del pasillo." — Go to the back of the hallway.
ser sea sean "Sea paciente, por favor." — Be patient, please.
estar esté estén "Estén listos a las ocho." — Be ready at eight.
saber sepa sepan "Sepan que no aceptamos retrasos." — Know that we don't accept delays.

⚠️ Spelling Changes (-CAR, -GAR, -ZAR)

To preserve the pronunciation of the root consonant, verbs ending in these suffixes require spelling adjustments:
-car → -qu (e.g. buscarbusque / busquen)
-gar → -gu (e.g. llegarllegue / lleguen)
-zar → -c (e.g. empezarempiece / empiecen)

3. Negative Formal Commands

🚫 Simple Rule

To form a negative formal command, simply add the word no directly before the affirmative command verb form. The verb conjugation itself does not change!

💡 Contrast with 'Tú'

Unlike informal 'tú' commands (where affirmative and negative forms use different rules), formal commands remain completely consistent. Affirmative: ¡Hable! / Negative: ¡No hable!

Examples:

  • Affirmative: "Abra la puerta." (Open the door) vs. Negative: "No abra la puerta." (Don't open the door).
  • Affirmative: "Fumen afuera." (Smoke outside) vs. Negative: "No fumen aquí." (Don't smoke here).
  • Affirmative: "Haga ruido." (Make noise) vs. Negative: "No haga ruido, el bebé duerme." (Don't make noise).

4. Daily Situations & Recipes

👨‍🍳 Culinary Recipes

Recipes in cookbooks and magazines frequently use formal plural commands (Ustedes) or formal singular (Usted) to direct the cook:

  • "Bata los huevos." — Beat the eggs.
  • "Añada una pizca de sal." — Add a pinch of salt.
  • "No deje hervir la leche." — Do not let the milk boil.

🏢 Workplace & Signs

Signs in public places, offices, and warnings use formal commands to communicate rules respectfully:

  • "Apague su motor." — Turn off your engine.
  • "Por favor, pase de uno en uno." — Please, go in one by one.
  • "No toque las barandillas." — Do not touch the handrails.
