Intensificadores

Master the use of intensifiers in Spanish. Learn how to modify adjectives, nouns, and verbs with 'muy', 'mucho', 'bastante', 'demasiado', and suffixes like '-ísimo' or prefix 'súper-'.

Intensificadores (Intensifiers)

In Spanish, we use intensifiers to modify adjectives, adverbs, nouns, or verbs to express varying degrees of size, intensity, or quantity. Differentiating between muy and mucho, and using intermediate modifiers or suffix forms, is essential to sound natural.

1. Muy vs. Mucho

Muy + Adjective / Adverb

Muy means "very". It is invariable (does not change shape) and is used exclusively before adjectives or adverbs.

"Este carro es muy rápido." (This car is very fast).

"Ella habla muy bien." (She speaks very well).

📦 Mucho (with Nouns or Verbs)

Mucho means "a lot / much / many". It changes for gender and number when modifying nouns. When modifying a verb, it is placed after the verb and is invariable.

"Tengo mucho trabajo." (I have a lot of work).

"Hay muchas personas." (There are many people).

"Él estudia mucho." (He studies a lot).

2. Bastante & Demasiado

⚖️ Bastante (Quite / Fairly / Enough)

Bastante indicates a high but not excessive degree. When preceding nouns, it has the plural form bastantes.

"La casa es bastante grande." (The house is quite big).

"Tengo bastantes libros." (I have quite a few books).

⚠️ Demasiado (Too / Too much)

Demasiado indicates an excessive amount. It changes for gender/number when modifying nouns, but is invariable with adjectives and verbs.

"El café está demasiado caliente." (The coffee is too hot).

"Compré demasiada comida." (I bought too much food).

3. Colloquial Suffixes (-ísimo & Súper-)

💥 Súper- & -ísimo

In conversational Spanish (especially in Mexico), speakers often use informal prefixes and suffixes to exaggerate qualities:

  • Súper- (prefix): Attach it to adjectives. "Es súper interesante." (It's super interesting).
  • -ísimo/a/os/as (suffix): Replace the final vowel of an adjective. "El examen estuvo dificilísimo." (The exam was extremely difficult).

"¡Este pastel está buenísimo!" (This cake is extremely good!).
