Verbos Irregulares en Presente

Master irregular verbs in the Spanish present tense: stem-changing verbs, yo-form irregulars, and completely irregular verbs.

Why Are Some Verbs Irregular?

Regular verbs follow predictable patterns, but irregular verbs break the rules. The good news? Most irregularities follow patterns you can learn! Once you recognize these patterns, irregular verbs become much easier to remember. Let's break them down into three clear groups.

1. Stem-Changing Verbs (Verbos con Cambio de Raíz)

🔄 What Changes?

The stem (the part before -ar, -er, -ir) changes in all forms except nosotros and vosotros. The endings remain regular! Think of it as a "boot" shape — the changes happen inside the boot.

👢 The "Boot Verb" Trick

If you draw a line around the forms that change in a conjugation table, it looks like a boot! Yo, tú, él/ella, ellos/ellas change. Nosotros and vosotros stay regular.

🔴 Pattern 1: E → IE

Subject querer (to want) pensar (to think) preferir (to prefer)
yoquieropiensoprefiero
quierespiensasprefieres
él / ella / ustedquierepiensaprefiere
nosotrosqueremospensamospreferimos
vosotrosqueréispensáispreferís
ellos / ellas / ustedesquierenpiensanprefieren

Other E→IE verbs: empezar, entender, cerrar, despertar, perder, sentir, mentir

🟠 Pattern 2: O → UE

Subject poder (can / to be able to) dormir (to sleep) volver (to return)
yopuedoduermovuelvo
puedesduermesvuelves
él / ella / ustedpuededuermevuelve
nosotrospodemosdormimosvolvemos
vosotrospodéisdormísvolvéis
ellos / ellas / ustedespuedenduermenvuelven

Other O→UE verbs: encontrar, contar, recordar, almorzar, morir, costar, jugar*

💡 Special Case: JUGAR

Jugar (to play) is the only U→UE verb in Spanish: yo juego, tú juegas… but nosotros jugamos. It follows the same boot pattern!

🟣 Pattern 3: E → I (only -ir verbs)

Subject pedir (to ask for) servir (to serve) repetir (to repeat)
yopidosirvorepito
pidessirvesrepites
él / ella / ustedpidesirverepite
nosotrospedimosservimosrepetimos
vosotrospedísservísrepetís
ellos / ellas / ustedespidensirvenrepiten

Other E→I verbs: seguir, vestirse, reír, sonreír, elegir, corregir, conseguir

2. First-Person Irregulars (Irregulares en YO)

☝️ The Pattern

These verbs are only irregular in the "yo" form. All other forms follow regular conjugation patterns. This is great news — you only need to memorize one form!

🧠 Memory Tip

Many of these verbs add a -go ending in the yo form. Students sometimes call these "yo-go verbs." Group them together and practice them as a set!

The Key "Yo-Go" Verbs:

InfinitiveYo FormOther Forms (Regular)Meaning
haceryo hagohaces, hace, hacemos…to do / to make
poneryo pongopones, pone, ponemos…to put
saliryo salgosales, sale, salimos…to go out / to leave

teneryo tengotienes, tiene, tenemos…*to have
traeryo traigotraes, trae, traemos…to bring
conoceryo conozcoconoces, conoce, conocemos…to know (people/places)

⚠️ Double Irregulars

Some verbs marked with * are double irregular: they have a yo-go form AND a stem change. For example, tener: yo tengo, tú tienes (yo-go + e→ie) and decir: yo digo, tú dices (yo-go + e→i).

  • Example: "Yo hago la tarea todas las noches." — I do homework every night.
  • Example: "Yo salgo del trabajo a las cinco." — I leave work at five.
  • Example: "Yo no conozco a tu hermano." — I don't know your brother.

3. Completely Irregular Verbs

🌪️ The "Wild Ones"

A few very common verbs don't follow any pattern. They must be memorized individually. The most important at the A1 level are ser, ir, and haber.

🎓 Why So Important?

These are among the most used verbs in the entire Spanish language. You'll use them in nearly every conversation, so learning them well is essential!

Full Conjugations:

Subject ser (to be — identity) ir (to go) haber (to have — auxiliary)
yosoyvoyhe
eresvashas
él / ella / ustedesvaha
nosotrossomosvamoshemos
vosotrossoisvaishabéis

  • Example: "Yo soy estudiante." — I am a student.
  • Example: "Nosotros vamos al cine esta noche." — We're going to the movies tonight.
  • Example: "Ella ha terminado su proyecto." — She has finished her project.

📸 Cultural Tip

In Latin America, "¡Vamos!" (Let's go!) is one of the most common expressions you'll hear. It comes from ir and is used as an encouragement, an invitation, or just to express excitement!
