The Spanish Conditional Tense: El Pospretérito

The Pospretérito (also known as the Condicional Simple) corresponds to the English helper verb **"would"**. It is used to describe hypothetical events, make polite requests, give advice, express wishes, or indicate probability/conjecture in the past. It is exceptionally regular to conjugate, sharing its stems with the future tense!

1. Regular Conjugations

The Easiest Formula

To conjugate regular verbs in the Pospretérito, you **keep the entire infinitive** (including -ar, -er, -ir) and attach the endings directly to it.

✏️ One Ending Set

All -AR, -ER, and -IR verbs use the **exact same set of endings**, which are identical to the -er/-ir endings of the Pretérito Imperfecto. Every ending has an accent mark on the 'í'!
