El Reporte Indirecto (C1)
Reporting what someone else said (El estilo o reporte indirecto) requires systematic shifts in **verb tenses**, **pronouns**, and **temporal/spatial deictics** when the reporting verb is in a past tense.
1. Tense Shifts in Reported Speech
When the reporting verb is in the past (e.g. dijo, explicó, preguntó), the original tenses change as follows:

2. Deictic & Pronoun Shifts
⏰ Time Markers
Temporal expressions must shift relative to the reporting moment rather than the original speaker's present:
- Hoy → Ese día / aquel día
- Ayer → El día anterior / el día antes
- Mañana → Al día siguiente / el día después
- Ahora → En ese momento / entonces
📍 Space & Pronouns
Spatial demonstratives and person markers change orientation:
- Aquí / acá → Ahí / allí / allá
- Este / esta → Ese / esa / aquel / aquella
- Mi / tu → Su / el suyo / el tuyo
- Traer / Venir → Llevar / Ir (often shifts)
3. No-Shift Exceptions
🕰️ Past Imperfect / Pluperfect
Verbs already in the Pretérito Imperfecto or Pluscuamperfecto do not shift tenses when reported.
• Direct: "Estudiaba mucho."
• Reported: Dijo que estudiaba mucho.
⚡ Present Reporting Verbs
If the reporting verb is in the **present, present perfect, or future**, no tense shifts occur in the reported clause.
• Direct: "Llegaré tarde."
• Reported: Dice que llegará tarde.
