In Spanish, the compound subjunctive tenses allow us to talk about completed past actions, subjective feelings, doubts, and hypothetical situations in relation to the past. Mastering the Pretérito Perfecto and the Pretérito Pluscuamperfecto is a key step to reaching B2 fluency.
1. Present Perfect Subjunctive

Formed by conjugating the auxiliary verb haber in the present subjunctive, followed by the past participle of the main verb:
- yo haya
- tú hayas
- él/ella/usted haya
- nosotros/as hayamos
- vosotros/as hayáis
- ellos/ellas/ustedes hayan

Used when the main clause is in the present, future, or present perfect, but refers to a completed action in the past.
"Espero que hayas tenido un buen viaje." (I hope you have had a good trip.)
"No creo que ella haya comido todavía." (I don't think she has eaten yet.)
2. Pluperfect / Past Perfect Subjunctive

Formed by conjugating the auxiliary verb haber in the imperfect subjunctive (either the -ra or the -se ending), followed by the past participle of the main verb:
- yo hubiera / hubiese
- tú hubieras / hubieses
- él/ella/usted hubiera / hubiese
- nosotros/as hubiéramos / hubiésemos
- vosotros/as hubierais / hubieseis
- ellos/ellas/ustedes hubieran / hubiesen

Used when the main clause is in a past or conditional tense, describing an action that took place prior to it. It also forms the "if" clause in third conditional structures.
"Me alegró que hubieras venido." (I was glad you had come.)
"Si hubiera sabido la verdad, habría actuado de otra forma." (If I had known the truth, I would have acted differently.)
